Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)

A defect in which there is a hole in the wall of the upper chambers of the heart from birth.

Types of Atrial Septal Defects

This hole is formed due to abnormal development of the heart while in the womb of the mother. This results in the oxygenated blood to flow from the left atrium into right atrium(containing deoxygenated blood) instead of going into the left ventricle. This causes blood to flow back into the lungs.
